The Police have uncovered a new method that criminal elements use to transport riffles across the country and evade security checks. The latest is the arrest of two suspected gun runners who concealed two Ak47 rifles in bags of beans.

The suspects, 37-year-old Badong Audu from Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State and 44-year-old Chimezie Okolie from Ekwusigo LGA Local Government Area of Anambra State, were arrested by Operatives of the FIB-Intelligence Response Team (IRT) on April 22, 2022.

They were transporting the rifles in a commercial vehicle to Nassarawa State for onward transport to Anambra State in the eastern part of the country when the vehicle was stopped and searched.

The operatives recovered the two AK47 rifles, 14 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, 39 rounds of 9.5 live ammunition, and four empty AK47 magazines.

The Force Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, paraded the suspects on Friday in Abuja.

One of the suspects, Chimezie Okoli, claimed that he is a member of Anambra State Vigilante Group Lion Head, Awka. According to him, gunmen had attacked members of the vigilante group, killing about four persons and carting away all their riffles, so he decided to acquire the Ak47 riffles to protect himself.

Badong stated that he sold the locally made Ak-47 riffles at N230,000 each.

Meanwhile, the Commander of the Intelligence Response Team, DCP Tunji Disu, asserted that the Police trailed the suspects for two months before they were eventually apprehended.

He also urged members of the public to always exercise patience when the Police are conducting stop and search routines as there is a reason behind such action.
