The Nigeria Police Force, as the lead agency in internal security, has been at the forefront in tackling the current security threats. To strengthen the synergy between the Police and the Armed Forces, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, paid a courtesy visit to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba psc(+), NPM, fdc at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Thursday.
General Lucky Irabor, in his address, noted that the nature of the security challenges in the country demands that there must be collaboration among all security agencies to redress these challenges.
Crime trends have been dynamic over time, from kidnapping for ransom, and ritual killings to attacks by terrorists on innocent citizens and properties, so the mechanism of addressing these trends has to be reviewed at intervals.
‘We believe the time has come for us to begin to look at new avenues to improve the level of our efficiency in handling these issues,” the Chief of Defense Staff asserted.
While noting that the Police have been at the forefront in the fight against insecurity with the Military only supporting, the CDS commended the leadership of the Force on their effort in ensuring the safety of members of the public with limited resources.
Meanwhile, IGP Baba, who noted that maintaining and enforcing law and order as well as ensuring people go about their lawful businesses safely is the mandate of NPF and other safety agencies, said that the Military has come to the aid of the Police in securing the country to the extent it has been outstretched.
However, the IGP expressed optimism that the Military would return to its statutory responsibility in due time.
