An analysis of crime patterns since the beginning of 2022 has shown significant progress as there is a downward trend in the frequency of major crimes in the country, according to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, fdc.

The IGP made this known on Thursday while meeting with Senior Police Officers to review the progress of strategies designed at the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Managers.

While there are still areas of grave concern, the Nigeria Police Force, as the lead agency in internal security, has recorded significant feats in curbing the trends of crimes and criminalities.

An operation launched by the Police authorities ‘Operation Sahara Storm’ in Sokoto State to root out identified bandits’ camps at Gudugudu, Tarke Forest, Luguhuru through Hurra and Markira, Goronyo, Wurno and Heli in Rabbah Local Government and Zangon-Isu forest in Goronyo LGA of the State, led the arrest of scores of bandits and recovery of arms and ammunition.

“Aside from the destruction of all the camps and other assets of the bandits a total of 38 suspected bandits/terror elements were arrested, 32 AK-47 rifles, on Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher, 1,412 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition, 1,200 rounds of live AA ammunition, one locally fabricated revolver pistol, three motor vehicles and two motorcycles, ten cartons of Pentazocine BP 30 injections, cash sum of N800,000.00, and three pairs of Army camouflage uniform, were recovered during the special operation,” IGP Baba stated.

Meanwhile, the IGP asserted that between January 2022 till date, collated crimes statistics revealed that 36 terror elements, 78 murder suspects,110 armed robbery suspects, 50 kidnapers, and 150 cultists were arrested during various Police operations across the country.

Also, 204 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued, 155 firearms of various descriptions, and 1,561 live ammunition were also recovered.

As the Police Force continues to improve its operational efficiency, IGP Baba has assured citizens that the Force will continue to address the fears of crime and engender seamless Police-citizen partnership.

“We must admit that we are not yet close to achieving our national security goal of restoring an internal security order that is enduring enough to fully reassure the citizens and restore optimal confidence in the Force, but I wish to solicit the continued
understanding and support of Nigerians,” the IGP intoned.
