According to Navy source, the suspects were heading towards Benin Republic when they were accosted by the naval personnel at Igbooja Village, close to Badagry area of Lagos State. The source said the suspects on sighting the personnel jumped into the river and swam for safety, abandoning their boats in the process.
The Commodore Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS Beecroft, Commodore Mauris Eno, while confirming the incident, said the recovered bags of the suspected cannabis which had different inscriptions such as TMT, AL, PMAN, Gad and WK were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
The Commodore said the activities of some suspected criminals who transport cannabis and other illicit substances within the area through the waterways have become worrisome, adding that the substance was packaged in 77 big bags and 23 medium bags, weighing about 4226.6kg with an estimated value of over N40 million.
Comm. Eno said the Navy under the leadership of the current Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok is determined to rid our waterways of all forms of illegalities, adding that the NNS Beecroft is committed to assisting the NDLEA deal with the issue of trafficking of illicit substance, and warned all criminal elements within the maritime environs to desist from these nefarious act.
The NDLEA principal Staff Officer, Operations and Intelligence, Lagos State Command, Mr. Lawal Isiaka, while receiving the substance, said that the agency would continue from where the Navy stopped, adding that it would do all within its ability to curb the use and distribution of illicit drugs across Lagos State and Nigeria at large.Last modified on Monday, 15 May 2017
